Humpback whales may risk collision with vessels in the Magellan Strait

Every summer, the Magellan Strait in the southwestern part of Chile becomes a popular feeding area for around 100 humpback whales. But the narrow strait is also a heavily used shipping route. New research in southern Chile supports ships slow down to reduce ship strikes to whales. These recommendations are consistent with the speed reductions that we helped to implement along the US east coast to protect whale populations.
