The crew and passengers of the Cape Ann Whale Watch boat Hurricane II spotted the whale on the afternoon of September 10. They reported the sighting, and, despite the rough conditions, stood by the whale until the MAER team arrived. By then, the whale had traveled almost seven miles.
The team was able to remove the life-threatening gear from the whale, which has been identified as ‘Nuke’ by the CCS Humpback Whale Studies program.
Prior to this, the whale had last been seen by CCS in the Bay of Fundy in late-August.
CCS is grateful to the crew and passengers of the Cape Ann Whale Watch for their assistance.
