Holyhead (UK), 9 december 2013 – On Monday 9th December, Holyhead Coastguard informed the CSIP of a fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus, national reference number SW2013/583, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fin_whale) which had live-stranded at Abergele on the north Wales coast.

The animal was only metres from the beach but in thigh deep water on an incoming tide. Both offshore and inshore lifeboats were launched and crews from the coastguard, RSPCA and RNLI attended.

At the height of the tide, crews entered the water and pushed the whales head round until it was facing the open sea where it slowly began to move off. The whale was shadowed for about a mile by the inshore lifeboat to make sure it didn’t change its course.

No further reports have been received which we can only assume is good news.
