The whale song of male humpbacks is important in sexual selection, and all males within a population have the same song type. The paper by Garland and colleagues published online reports the horizontal transmission of song types eastward through whale populations in the western and central South Pacific via a series of “cultural waves” over an 11 year period—a remarkable example of rapid cultural transmission among populations at a vast geographic range. Listen to the audio file for samples of two song types from the South Pacific whale populations.
